The Erie County Independent Council on Aging, Inc. (ICA) is a non-for profit agency who has strong and deeply rooted commitment to serve seniors in Erie County and Northwestern PA. Although the formation of the Council occurred in 1977, several significant events preceded its inceptions and continue to influence our philosophy and mission. “To improve the quality of life for mature adults, while fostering a positive image of aging.”
In 1956, the United Way of Erie County and the Junior League of Erie established a Division of Aging in order to more closely look at the needs of the elderly in the community. As a result of their efforts, several programs were begun including the Independent Council on Aging. After nearly twenty-five years of promoting the needs of the elderly and establishing several important programs, the United Way felt that an affiliate organization was ready to stand on its own. Erie County Independent Council on Aging, Inc. was formed and today our banner continues to stand proudly under this name.
